The More Things Change…

Don’s words on the onslaught of hate speech that is turning “our” radio airwaves into sonic sewage systems of loathing got me thinking about a speech made by Bobby Kennedy.
The date was April 5, 1968.  That date might ring a bell to some…  it was a day after my father had to report to Fort [...]

Hate Media At A Loss For Words

I occasionally listen to one or more of the hate media mouthpieces just to see what they are up to.  Yesterday (Sunday—yes they rerun this drivel on Sunday) I spent a little time listening to Rush Limbaugh who was crying the blues about the loss of the election to the Democrats in spite of the [...]

Presidential Pardons

I do not understand why Presidents issue so many pardons.  The original idea of a pardon was to undo an injustice or commute the sentence of someone who had served enough time.  Unfortunately, the constitution provides no check to the power of Presidential pardon.  This is why people like Mark Rich, Clinton’s millionaire buddy, got [...]

While I Have Been Gone

Boy have I been busy!  Creativity  comes to me in amazing, intense spurts of productivity.  The past few days I have written some magazine articles, interviewed boxer Fernando Guerrero and his trainer Hal Chernoff and pitched movie.
Here is the link to the boxing article.

More Pot Clubs Than Starbucks in San Fran?

The Office of National Drug Control Policy is claiming that there are more “pot clubs” than Starbucks in San Francisco in a posting on its official blog, pushingback.com.
First of all, let’s see how many Starbucks are in the area.  Starbucks spokesperson Vivian Doan told The San Francisco Chronicle that there are 71.  The government claims [...]

The Christmas Creep

No, I’m not talking about The Grinch or any other fictional character.  The Christmas Creep is the continuous elongation of the holiday.
{in my best old man voice}
When I was a kid the Christmas holiday began on Black Friday.  This is the day after Thanksgiving, which is last Friday in November.  This was a big event [...]

Massey Energy = Evil

What else would you call a company that violated the clean water act 4500+ times over a 6 year period?  Thankfully, the EPA sued and now Massey is paying a $20 million fine and being forced to make an additional $10 million in improvements.
Think about this for a moment- this company was willing to fuck [...]

What I Do Not Understand About Gay Marriage

Today I stumbled upon a commentary that explains my angle on gay marriage.  It covers things I have been asking for a long time.  I’m not here to reinvent the wheel- so here ya go.

Doggone: The Wicomico County Council has Gone and Done It

Well I am about to break two vows that I have kept for a long time.  One is not to worry about the inanity of [Salisbury, Maryland] City Council or County Council doings and the second is to never run for public office.  What prompts this cataclysmic change is that the Wicomico County Council is [...]

A Matter of Love

I thought Tom might have hit this already, but since he hasn’t I’ll fill in the gap. This is too important to pass by. ~Ryan

Finally tonight as promised, a Special Comment on the passage, last week, of Proposition Eight in California, which rescinded the right of same-sex couples to marry, and [...]

Ten Reasons the GOP Lost by Jon Gingerich

I invited Jon Gingerich to take a swing at a postmortem of the election for our humble blog.  The result should be must reading for the GOP faithful.

Cheers,

Tom
********

So, it’s been a week. We’ve had plenty of time to let this sink in, to let the euphoria settle, to mull over this historical election and to [...]

Pot Vs Puppies

Massachusetts had ballot measures to ban dog racing and to decriminalize of marijuana.  Dog racing was banned by a margin of 56%-44%.  Pot was decriminalized with yays raising their hands for high by a measure of 65% and the nays coming in at 35%.
So 9% more people in the state of Massachusetts wanted to decriminalize [...]

Fear of Taxes

Even given all of this, somehow, some way, Republicans are able to ALWAYS say they are the ones that handle the economy better and it’s just pure bullshit.  One thing the Republicans do is what W did, namely, lower the taxes of the wealthy under the guise of job creation and then instead of raising [...]

Losing With Dignity?

As I get older the phrase “discretion is the better part of valor” continually shows itself to be true.  It is inline with the William Shakespeare line from King Henry the Fourth, “Caution is preferable to rash bravery.”
Since Barack Obama was declared President-elect I have been reading and listening to the righties whine, complain, make [...]

Idiots

Idiots have already started “Impeach Obama” groups.
Can someone please do the following:
1) list the high crimes and misdemeanors perpetrated by Barack Obama that are impeachable offenses
2) tell me where the Constitution of the United States allows for the impeachment for offenses that have occured BEFORE the man takes office
3) offer these groups some of Rush [...]

Michael Crichton (1942-2008)

Lest this slip through the cracks, author Michael Crichton, whose pen brought about Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Disclosure, and “ER” among others, passed away Tuesday, after losing a private battle against cancer. He leaves behind one child.
You will be missed.

President-Elect Barack Obama’s Victory Speech

If you missed it last night, here it is. –Ryan

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the [...]

Social Propositions Update

PROP 8 (CA): Looks like it, unfortunately, will pass, although the result has not officially been called yet. Prop 8’s passage makes California the first state to not only ban same-sex marriage, but actually rescind the right already granted by the California State Supreme Court, who determined that it was unconstitutional and discriminatory to ban gay and [...]

Reflections Upon Barack Obama’s Victory

The following was written in 1971 by Dr. Hunter S Thompson.  I consider this to be THE highlight of his whole writing career.  It perfectly describes and encapsulates the struggle of the 60’s and the come down of the 1968 election, which saw Richard Nixon defeat Hupert Humphrey 301-191.  And while it had not happened [...]
